SUMMARY:Virtual Tour of the Georgetown Campus Bee Hives
DESCRIPTION:Register for event >\nEvent capacity: 40 \nSuggested donation supporting the university’s COVID-19 response and student financial aid: $25 \nUrban apiculture and backyard beekeeping are booming trends with many interesting elements that connect people to food and their environment. In this session you will learn about the native pollinators and honey bees that call the Hilltop home. To help counter threats to the Earth’s biodiversity\, Georgetown has made a long-term commitment to increasing native and non-native pollinators on campus and has recently obtained recognition as a Xerces Society Bee Campus. Join the Georgetown Bee Campus project to see (and hear!) what the buzz is all about! \n  \n\n  \nHost bio\n \nWilliam Hahn\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\, serves as director of GeorgeSquared\, a graduate biomedical education program offered in partnership with George Mason University. Additionally\, he is adjunct professor of Science\, Technology\, and International Affairs in the School of Foreign Service and research professor of biology. Previously he had been associate dean of Georgetown College\, assistant dean of Georgetown McDonough\, and associate professor of environmental biology at Columbia University. His research interests are in plant taxonomy\, conservation\, and molecular evolution. He has been a beekeeper for 10 years and is currently pursuing research projects on plant diversity used by bees and native pollinator conservation. \nAbout Georgetown Campus Bee Hives\nLast year\, Georgetown’s Laudato Si’ Fund approved a grant to develop the university as a Bee Campus. The Laudato Si’ Fund takes its name from Pope Francis’ encyclical on environmental justice and supports sustainability projects and programs that respond to Francis’ call to “care for our common home” by creating a healthier and more biologically diverse local ecosystem. One of 11 grant winners across campus for the 2019–2020 academic year\, the Bee Campus committee focuses on establishing a campus habitat plan to improve food and nesting resources for pollinators\, hosting pollinator awareness events\, sponsoring student service-learning projects\, posting signage to educate the campus and broader community\, and partnering with faculty members to offer pollinator-focused courses.
