SUMMARY:Urban Foraging on the Hilltop
DESCRIPTION:Register for event >\nEvent capacity: 50 \nSuggested donation supporting the university’s COVID-19 response and student financial aid: $25 \nForaging for wild edibles is a practice as old as humankind\, and one that remains a part of daily life in much of the world. Urban foraging provides a unique\, intimate way to explore a city—and find a free meal!—while learning to appreciate the natural world. Join Georgetown biology professor Martha Weiss\, Ph.D.\, and pharmacology professor Adriane Fugh-Berman\, M.D. (M’88) for this introduction to urban foraging. They’ll discuss foraging in Washington\, D.C. and highlight the delicious plants that grow on Georgetown’s campus. \n  \n\n  \nHost bios\n \nMartha Weiss\, Ph.D.\, is a professor in the Department of Biology\, where she directs the Environmental Biology major and co-directs the Environmental Studies minor. Trained as a botanist and entomologist\, she conducts research on plant-insect interactions\, insect learning\, and insect community ecology\, and teaches a range of environment- and plant-related courses. An avid forager\, she enjoys collecting and preparing foods gathered on her walks on campus and around Washington\, D.C. \n \nAdriane Fugh-Berman\, M.D. (M’88)\, is a professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology and in the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center\, where she teaches graduate and medical students about critical assessment of drugs and other therapeutics. She directs PharmedOut\, a GUMC project that advances evidence-based prescribing and educates health care professionals and students about pharmaceutical and medical device marketing practices. An expert on botanical medicine and dietary supplements\, she directs Georgetown’s Urban Herbs project\, which maintains ecological gardens on campus that mix edible\, medicinal\, and ornamental plants. She is the author of a clinical text\, The 5-Minute Herb and Dietary Supplement Consult\, and Alternative Medicine: What Works. \nAbout Virtual Alumni Experiences: Summer Sessions\nJoin us for our new virtual experiences program\, Summer Sessions!
