SUMMARY:Hoya Kids: Using the Scientific Method with Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Register for event >\nEvent capacity: 12 \nSuggested donation supporting the university’s COVID-19 response and student financial aid: $25 \nEarly learners are natural scientists\, inherently curious and making sense of the world around them. Think of all the “why” questions that parents and teachers hear. Even small children are capable of doing an experiment using the scientific method. Author Cynthia Wylie (MA’84) will start the program by reading her book and then leading the participants through several games and experiments related to plants and gardening. She will recommend simple\, inexpensive items that children can use to follow along at home. Each family will receive a box of goodies including a hardcover signed copy of her book\, The Great Garden Party\, with SeedPop and stickers. \nWhat you’ll need\nSuggested materials to be shared via email prior to the event \n  \n\n  \nHost bio\n \nCynthia Wylie (MA’84) grew up on a farm in Western Pennsylvania which is where she first developed her love for all things green. She is the founder of Bloomers Island\, the brand that promotes a healthy lifestyle for children with the help of a colorful cast of garden characters called the Bloomers. Wylie has designed and patented innovative gardening products including SeedPops that have been sold in over five thousand stores in North America. Bloomers Island started in schools where she and her team worked with thousands of children in North and South America. She is a regular presenter at the Early Childhood STEM Conference sponsored by Cal Tech. The first book in her Bloomers Island book series\, published by Rodale Kids\, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books\, was released in January 2018. Four more books in the Bloomers Island series were subsequently published. She received a full fellowship to Georgetown University for an M.A. in Economics. \nAbout Bloomers Island\nThe Bloomers Island mission is to encourage the healthiest planet and healthiest people possible by teaching and inspiring young children about the magical world of gardening. We believe that hands-on gardening education is the way to go\, because when kids understand how things work\, it empowers them to ask more questions and feel intelligent\, which creates passion. Plus\, understanding gardening — or in a larger sense\, agriculture — is to understand complex systems that include plant science\, biology\, healthy eating\, and environmental awareness.
