Join Professor Anthony Clark Arend (SFS’80) for a four-week course on International Law and War. This course will meet every Thursday at 4 p.m. ET beginning July 16\, 2020. The class is limited to 15 members so you will be able to interact with not only Professor Arend but your fellow Hoya alumni classmates! \nWar\, sadly\, has been a fact of human existence since the beginning of time. From rocks and sticks to nuclear weapons and drones\, human beings have used lethal force against other human beings to seek to a variety of goals. While Cicero’s aphorism may lead us to question the relevance of international law to war\, over the years legal rules have developed to regulate both the recourse to force (the jus ad bellum) and the conduct of warfare (the jus in bello.) The purpose of this class will be to explore international law in these areas and to discuss mechanisms for enforcing this area of the law. The class will be limited to 15 participants\, encouraging engaging dialogue each week with both Professor Arend and your fellow Hoya alumni classmates! \nWhat you’ll need\nAfter registering\, Professor Arend will share a course syllabus and suggested reading material prior to the first class. \n  \n\n  \nHost bio\n \nAnthony Clark Arend (SFS 1980) is a Professor of Government and Foreign Service and Chair of the Government Department at Georgetown University. He previously served as Vice Dean in the Walsh School of Foreign Service and Director of the Master of Science in Foreign Service. He has published seven books\, including Legal Rules and International Society. He is a Senator on the Georgetown University Alumni Association Board of Governors and is a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. \nAbout Georgetown Summer Sessions\nJoin us for our new virtual experiences program\, Summer Sessions!
